Tasks include:Fabricate, install, and maintain, HVAC systems and custom fittings.Install, maintain, and repair galvanized metal and corrugated roofing and skylight flashing or stainless steel equipment.Use brakes, forming rods, squaring shears, elbow machines, bar folders, emery wheels, and punches.Repair metal windows, hand rails and doors; form and weld, solder, braze, or silver solder a variety of metal objects, fixtures, equipment, and structures.Operate hand and power brakes, forming rods, squaring shears, elbow machines, folding machines, emery wheels, power punches, and other power and hand tools.Estimate quantity of material and hours of labor required to perform various jobs.Service and install fire dampers, ventilation and heating ducts.Inspect ventilation and exhaust systems for fire hazard, hazardous fumes, and general effectiveness of operation.Use arc and acetylene welding equipment.Ability to work with #4 finish stainless steel.Required QualificationsCompletion of a recognized apprenticeship as a sheet metal mechanic, or full journey status as a sheet metal mechanic in a union, or four years' applicable work experience (vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis).Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of sheet metal trade; safety pre-cautioning; and sheet metals and their characteristics and uses.Ability to do TIG, MIG, stick and acetylene welding, soldering and brazing; work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs; and use hand and power tools. May be required to take a welding test.Demonstrated experience or ability in doing work in commercial and/or institutional settings.Ability to read and understand written information and instructions.Ability to read and understand Blueprint drawings.Ability to communicate clearly.Ability to maintain and use hand and power tools safely as required for the trade.Experience working in sensitive situations such as: operational offices, classrooms, dorm rooms, rest rooms, etc.Ability to work in confined spaces.Valid driver?s license or the ability to obtain one prior to starting work in order to drive a state-owned vehicle for travel to work locations.Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.Ability to perform daily work tasks independently under limited supervision.Possess technical accuracy and recordkeeping skills.Ability to work with computer hardware and software required to track work orders and record time worked.Possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a friendly and cooperative manner with students, staff, and faculty at all levels of the organization and in contacts with the public.Ability to manage time well and work under pressure situations with tight schedules and deadlines to complete projects.Preferred QualificationsPossess and maintain ASME Section IX welding certification with AWS B2.1-1-205-96 (R2007) in accordance with ASME B31.1; UA-21 certification is acceptableKnowledge of applicable Washington Administrative Code (WAC) regulations, and local building and plumbing codesKnowledge of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) rules and regulations, standard job safety rules, proper use of a face respiratorSalaryNew hires typically start at $4,066; an excellent benefits package is included.Bargaining UnitThis position is part of bargaining unit B and is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with Washington Federation of State?Employees.Application InstructionsA cover letter and resume are required and should address your experience related to the position responsibilities and the required and preferred qualifications.Please include the names and contact information of three professional references.Closing Date NotesPosition is open until filled.Western Washington University (WWU) is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer committed to assembling a diverse, broadly trained faculty and staff.
