About the Department The Ethnic Student Center (ESC) is a student-run organization within the Association Students (AS) of Western Washington University and was established in 1991, and part of the Dean of Students Unit. Our goal is to help students Affirm their identity, Build a sense of community, and Cultivate leadership (Our "ABCs"). The ESC is also home to several diverse clubs open to students of all backgrounds. These clubs promote the values of the ESC and offer a ?home away from home? for all students. Many students within the ESC have moved on to become leaders on campus and in the community. The Dean of Students Administrative Unit and the Viking Union Organization support Western?s mission to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive, student-centered university that develops the potential of learners and the well-being of communities. About the Position At a time when the need to affirm identities and instill resiliency is so vital in the higher education journey, Western remains dedicated to ensuring that its diverse and cross-cultural student groups have welcoming space and environment to gather, meet, and celebrate their unique identities. Western is currently expanding its Ethnic Student Center (ESC) space to provide a larger and more comprehensive physical space for these groups on campus. The ESC Programming and Events Manager is a new position at Western and the position will be responsible for planning, managing and budgeting for all major programs and events sponsored and under the supervision of the Center. The ESC Programming and Events Manager position will focus on working with the student groups to celebrate their heritage, their cultures, and their identities through small and large programs and events, including an annual conference, Center sponsored retreats, a graduation celebration, and individual group events throughout the academic year. The Manager will work in close collaboration with the ESC Director and the ESC Club Advising Manager and may assume some duties of the Club Advising Manager in their absence. In addition, the Manager will work with professional staff in the Student Union and across campus to bring together resources, faculty, staff, and students for programs and events. This position will also serve as budget authority for the ESC, approving all expenditure requests, and tracking and forecasting the ESC budget. Required Qualifications - Bachelor?s degree in psychology, event management, business administration, education, adult education, or another field of study that supports the work duties or Bachelor?s and equivalent work experience. - A minimum of two (2) years of advising experience working in education, student activities, student affairs, leadership development, government, military, or related field with ethnically and racially diverse communities. - A minimum of two (2) years? experience that demonstrates leadership experience and developing educational, cultural and social programs designed to engage a broad array of diverse student populations. - Demonstrated ability to work successfully with and support a diverse student body and staff as well as possess a strong commitment to creating an inclusive environment for staff and students, the delivery of programs that support the diversity objectives of the campus community, and the development of cultural competency skills. - Experience in budget development and management. - Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment that requires flexible hours. - Demonstrated experience communicating effectively and professionally, including written, interpersonal, and public speaking skills related to group facilitation. - This position is subject to a fingerprint background check. Preferred Qualifications - Master?s degree in Student Affairs Administration, Education, Management, Psychology, or another field of study that supports the work assigned. - Demonstrated experience planning, forecasting, monitoring, managing and reconciling budgets. - Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a comprehensive assessment plan that evaluates and analyzes the effectiveness of programs. - One or more years of professional work experience in an organization, or on a program, specifically designed to meet the needs of an underserved, underrepresented, and/or marginalized population. - Knowledge of student leadership and student development theories and their applications in practice.
